01 Know the city

Getting to know Quanzhou: manufacturing depth and the deepest Hokkien roots

Quanzhou sits on the southeast Fujian coast and was a key starting point of the Maritime Silk Road; in 2021 "Quanzhou: Emporium of the World in Song-Yuan China" was inscribed as a World Heritage site. In 2024 the city's GDP reached ¥1,309.487 billion, up 6.5%, with a 2.0 : 51.8 : 46.2 sector split; permanent population was 8.914 million with a 71.19% urbanisation rate; exports totalled ¥198.801 billion, up 5.4% (Quanzhou Statistics Bureau, 2024 bulletin).

Industrial depth: footwear and apparel, textiles, building materials, food, machinery and petrochemicals are the pillars; 26 of 36 above-scale industrial categories grew, and manufacturing value-added rose 7.8% (same source). The "Jinjiang model" is county-level clusters plus private enterprise — for contract manufacturing, supply chains and distributors, few cities are as direct.

Taiwan roots: Hokkien language, clan lineages and temple networks are densest here. Many Taiwanese families trace their ancestry to Quanzhou, and root-seeking, pilgrimage and clan exchanges run year-round — a soft environment no other city can replicate.

02 Arrival & settling in

Arriving in Quanzhou: airport, rail and your first-week checklist

By air: Quanzhou Jinjiang International Airport is about 12 km from the city centre, with mostly domestic routes. From Taiwan, most itineraries connect via Xiamen or Fuzhou, or fly to Xiamen and continue by high-speed rail.

By rail: the Fuzhou–Xiamen high-speed line puts Xiamen and Quanzhou about half an hour apart. Quanzhou has several stations (including Quanzhou, Quanzhou East, Quanzhou South and Jinjiang) — check the exact station on your ticket, and confirm services on the official 12306 platform.

Documents and registration: use your Taiwan Compatriot Permit; a single-entry permit can be applied for at selected ports if you do not hold a valid one. Hotels handle accommodation registration; if you stay with friends or rent, register at the police station within 24 hours as the district public security authority requires.

First-week checklist: real-name mobile number, bank card and mobile payment, maps and translation, emergency numbers (110/119/120/122) — and group the factories you plan to visit by county, because distances across Quanzhou add up.

03 Housing & neighbourhoods

Where to live in Quanzhou: old town, city centre and industrial belts

Districts: Licheng is the old town — strong street life, heritage sites on the doorstep; Fengze is the city centre with the fullest commercial and medical amenities; Jinjiang and Shishi are dense with trade and manufacturing and close to factories; Nan'an and Hui'an sit in the industrial belt with lower rents.

What to check: landlord identity and title, exact address and size, deposit and payment cycle, property fees and utilities, furniture, repair responsibilities, early-termination terms, and whether the landlord supports residence registration. Quanzhou has many self-built houses and urban villages — verify ownership, fire safety and electrical safety.

Commute: distances across Quanzhou are significant. Fix your workplace or main visiting area first, then choose housing; an hour saved daily is worth more than ¥200 off the rent.

Transition: short-let for one to two weeks, cover both the industrial belt and living areas, then sign a longer lease.

04 Work & business

Working, starting a business and business visits in Quanzhou

Industry map: footwear and apparel in Jinjiang and Shishi, building materials in Nan'an, food in Jinjiang, machinery in Licheng and Nan'an, petrochemicals in Quangang. Among above-scale industries, textiles grew 12.1%, footwear 15.1% and chemical fibres 27.8% in 2024 (Quanzhou Statistics Bureau bulletin), with a complete supporting chain.

Starting up: business registration, scope approval and tax registration are handled at municipal or county administrative service centres. Taiwanese youth entrepreneurs should check the actual entry conditions of the Quanzhou Taiwanese Investment Zone and the various youth entrepreneurship bases.

Legal boundaries: employment requires a work permit and residence document; sole proprietorship and company formation have different conditions; a short business visit does not confer the right to work. Confirm with the competent authority.

Prepare for visits: bring samples, price lists, clear minimum order quantities and delivery expectations. Quanzhou owners buy from samples — more direct than any presentation.

05 Daily life & getting around

Everyday Quanzhou: transport, payments, food and weather

Getting around: buses cover the main urban area, while county-to-county trips rely on coaches and taxis; Quanzhou and Jinjiang stations handle regional rail. Reaching Jinjiang or Shishi factories typically takes 30–60 minutes by car — plan one corridor per day.

Payments: WeChat Pay and Alipay accept some foreign cards depending on issuer and verification; keep a physical card and cash as backup.

Food: misua soup, beef thick soup, oyster omelette, ginger duck and four-fruit soup. Religious and clan activities are frequent — respect local custom at pilgrimage and festival events, and ask before photographing.

Weather: a subtropical maritime climate with long, humid summers and typhoon exposure from July to September. Check forecasts before travelling; coastal counties are windy.

06 Health & emergencies

Healthcare and emergencies in Quanzhou

Emergency numbers: 110 police, 119 fire, 120 ambulance, 122 traffic accidents; 12345 for government inquiries and complaints.

Where to go: tertiary hospitals are concentrated in Licheng and Fengze; county-level hospitals in Jinjiang, Nan'an and Shishi have solid emergency capacity and are closer to factory areas. Appointments are usually made through hospital WeChat accounts or apps.

For Taiwan compatriots: register with your Taiwan Compatriot Permit. Call ahead to confirm whether English or other language support is available. Referral to a specialist hospital in Xiamen is also an option.

Insurance and records: buy cover that includes mainland treatment; carry a one-page Chinese–English summary of allergies, medication and history, and keep every receipt.

07 Schools & family life

Moving to Quanzhou with family: schools, commutes and family life

School types: public schools allocate by district and residence conditions; private schools and international-curriculum programmes cluster in Jinjiang and Fengze. Admissions rules, fees and places change annually — confirm with the school and district education bureau.

Typical documents: Taiwan Compatriot Permit, proof of residence, vaccination records and the previous school's enrolment certificate or transcripts; the school confirms the final list.

Commute and housing: travelling between Jinjiang and central Quanzhou takes about 30–60 minutes. Work out the school run and workplace before discussing rent.

Amenities: the city centre has shopping, parks and libraries, and county-level cities are catching up. For a long stay, spend two nights in the area before deciding.

08 Culture, food & leisure

Culture, food and clan ties: the texture of life in Quanzhou

World Heritage sites: Kaiyuan Temple, West Street, Luoyang Bridge, Qingyuan Mountain, the Tianhou Temple and the Deji Gate ruins; Xunpu village's flower-bun styling is the most popular living experience of recent years. Check official notices for hours and bookings.

Intangible heritage: nanyin music, marionette theatre, liyuan opera and Hui'an stone carving, with frequent public performances around the Confucian Temple area.

Clans and temples: many Taiwanese clan associations maintain long-standing ties with Quanzhou ancestral temples; root-seeking usually starts with genealogies, clan associations and temple councils. If you join a pilgrimage or festival, ask about etiquette and customary offerings first.

Festivals: Lantern Festival street parades and the Dragon Boat sea-splashing ritual in Chijiang, Shishi, with dates announced by organisers each year.

09 When you need local help

Local help in Quanzhou: government, associations and avoiding scams

Government channels: municipal and county administrative service centres, the 12345 hotline, and city/county Taiwan affairs offices for cross-strait matters.

Association channels: the local Taiwan business association, Taiwanese youth entrepreneurship bases, and trade associations for footwear, building materials and food. Starting with a guild beats cold-calling factories one by one.

Scam warning: never hand original permits, bank cards or company seals to an agent who promises to "handle everything"; check business licences and premises before signing; pay large sums to corporate accounts and keep the contract.

Xining side: the association can pre-arrange premises, accommodation and contacts in Xining, turning "factory visits in Fujian" and "landing in Qinghai" into one continuous line.

10 From Fujian to Qinghai

From Quanzhou to Xining: the smoothest way to transfer

Flights: Quanzhou Jinjiang to Xining almost always involves a connection (commonly via Xi'an, Chongqing, Chengdu or Zhengzhou); alternatively fly out of Xiamen Gaoqi. Confirm routes, schedules and fares with the airline or ticketing platform.

By rail: Quanzhou to Xi'an or Lanzhou and then to Xining suits travellers who are not in a hurry; Lanzhou to Xining is about one hour on the high-speed line.

Luggage: Xining is at 2,261 m with sharp day–night swings — bring a shell jacket or light down, plus regular medication, sunscreen, lip balm and a thermos.

Pacing: three to five days of factory and product visits in Quanzhou, one or two days in Xiamen for documents or connections, then fly to Xining. Take the first two days there slowly.

Arrival: send the association your flight, arrival time, party size and the sites you want to see; the secretariat can coordinate pickup, first-week accommodation and a park visit route.
